World Health Organization: Certifies Nigeria An Ebola Free Nation

Nigeria has successfully contained an ebola outbreak, officially declaring itself ebola-free after 42 days without any regenerated cases.

"This is a spectacular success story," World Health Organization official Rui Gama Vazdeclared at a press conference, according to NBC News. "But we must be clear that we have only won a battle, the war will only end when West Africa is also declared free of Ebola."

Beginning in July, Nigeria reported 20 cases of ebola, with eight deaths overall. Though they were caught off-guard by the presence of ebola in their country, transmitted by a Liberian-American diplomat who collapsed in a Nigerian airport after flying with symptoms, an aggressive response by the Nigerian government helped contain the outbreak — no easy feat, since the diplomat,Patrick Sawyer, collapsed in Lagos, a city of 21 million people. As the Scientific American reports:

The swift battle was won not only with vigilant disinfecting, port-of-entry screening and rapid isolation but also with boot leather and lots and lots of in-person follow-up visits, completing 18,500 of them to find any new cases of Ebola among a total of 989 identified contacts.

Such ground-level work may sound extreme, and the usually measured WHO declared the feat "a piece of world-class epidemiological detective work." But asWilliam Schaffner, chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University, says, "Actually what Nigeria did is routine, regular—but vigorous and rigorous—public health practice. They identified cases early—fortunately they had a limited number—and they got a list of all of the contacts, and they put those people under rigorous surveillance so that if they were to become sick, they wouldn't transmit the infection to others," he says.

5,300 Oyo workers get job provision

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has presented appointment letters to 5,300 teaching and non-teaching workers in the 33 local government areas.

At the ceremony in Ibadan yesterday, letters were distributed to the workers employed from the 11 local governments in Ibadanland.

The remaining letters are scheduled for distribution in Oyo, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa at later dates.

Ajimobi said the recruitment was unprecedented in the state's history.

He said the exercise was part of government's efforts to improve the standard of education and provide jobs.

The governor added that over 31,000 teachers had been sent on various trainings and 24,000 have been promoted.

He said: "Let me congratulate our teachers. I can say it authoritatively that our teachers have never had it so good. They have continued to enjoy salary increase and their appointments have been gazetted.

"So many schools had been rehabilitated; six models schools are being built."
Ajimobi hailed the cordial relationship between his administration and the teachers, saying that the civil service has not had any cause to go on strike since the inception of his administration.

The Chairmen of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and TESCOM, Busari Adebisi and Abu Gbadamosi, said the recruitment would contribute significantly to the development of education.

Two of the beneficiaries- Tirimisiyu Damilare and Akorede Balkit-said they would contribute their quota towards attaining the educational standard in the state.

Don’t Beg Me To Come Back; I Never Left PDP – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described appeals for him to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as unnecessary, as he never left the party, but only decided not to be active beyond the ward level.
Obasanjo, while reacting to pleas made to him by National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, Senate president, David Mark and former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, last Wednesday in Abuja where they all begged the former president for forgiveness and asked him to come back to the party, said his being passive in the party was based on "principle, morality, honour, integrity, commitment and character which are paramount."
In a statement released yesterday in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said; "Last week when I was in South Africa as the chairman of AU Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan and while with my fellow commissioners, we were deliberating on how to help that new country out of its problem of security and violence, I received avalanche of news and cacophony of appeals and pleadings from some quarters of PDP leadership.
"There are misunderstandings and misrepresentations which some of those appeals and pleas manifested; hence this explanation from me. Talking of inviting me back to PDP is wrong and it is a great misrepresentation as I have never left PDP and I will never leave PDP. I have said it before and I will say it again, I rose to become the President of Nigeria on the platform of PDP and for that reason alone, I will remain a card-carrying and ward-active member of PDP for as long as I have to be a political party member.
"Secondly, nobody has personally offended me as a result of my membership of PDP. If, however, anybody or group feels offended by my continued membership, I will offer an unreserved apology but continue to remain in the Party. I have had occasions to say to the President, the Senate president and the Party chairman separately that I have no quarrel with any individual or group in the Party. There are, for me, issues of principle, morality, honour, integrity, commitment and character which are paramount.
"For instance, as a former President of Nigeria, the chairman of West Africa Commission on Drug and a member of Global Commission on Drug, I cannot accept that the zonal leader of my political party and, worse still in my zone, will be an indicted drug baron wanted in America.
"How do I explain that to friends outside Nigeria? This is only one of the many issues that I have pointed and still pointing out. I have national and international standard to maintain and reputation to keep and sustain. For these reasons, I opted to remain active only at the ward level of the Party till the leadership does the needful. But under no condition will my commitment to Nigeria be diminished.
"And, for me, it is commitment to Nigeria first and any other commitment can only follow in second or third place. Where any other commitment is in tandem with what I see and understand as commitment to Nigeria, such other commitment will share a pride of place with Nigeria.
"I must hasten to thank the President, the Senate president and the Chairman of PDP with whom, at their instances, these issues have been discussed and laid to rest. My interest and commitment to Nigeria go beyond partisan politics.
"Today, Nigeria needs all hands on deck to deal with our pressing problems of security including the issue of Chibok girls, widening inequality, infrastructure, impunity, corruption, poverty and youth education, skill-acquisition, empowerment and employment. These are issues of concern to most Nigerians. We all need to join hands to move Nigeria forward. I don't need to be begged for that.
"Rather, I beg and appeal to those who are begging me to realize that we must put Nigeria's interest above politics – party or personal – otherwise, we will all be judged at the bar of history if not the bar of current affairs. In addition, we must preserve, sustain and deepen democracy and democratic practices," the statement read.

Electric Generator Killed One In Government Owned Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) in Akure

An electric generator serving the government owned Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) in Akure has killed Mr. Rotimi Fagbemi, a staff in the engineering department of the broadcasting station.

The incident happened over the weekend and forced management to shut down broadcast transmission, thereby going off the air.
Sources in the Station informed SaharaReporters that Mr. Fagbemi was killed as a result of the explosion from the generator after he had carried out repair work on a faulty part.

Our correspondent gathered that Mr. Fagbemi's body was mutilated during the explosion.

The faulty generator had been serving the radio and television arm of the broadcast station for the past one-year, a staff told our correspondent.

The staff also added "We have repeatedly complained of the obsolete state of the generator and other equipments in the station".

Many staff and colleagues of the deceased were besieged the broadcast station at Orita Obele, along ijare road in Akure wailing and accusing the management, mostly the Director General of the station of cruelty over the plight of workers and equipment used in the station.

They also took a swipe at the embattled governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko and his Information Commissioner, Kayode Akinmade describing both as failed leaders for not fulfilling promises to overhaul the station.

It would be recalled that some union leaders in the station who called for a change and protested over the situation in the station got punished and victimized for daring to expose the rot at the media outfit.

BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY CAUTIONS TO THE PAPARAZZI

Prince William issued a warning message to the paparazzi against trailing and harassing Prince George his son.

Lawyers representing the Williams Family, second-in-line to the throne, and his pregnant wife Kate, have circulated written letters to the freelance photographers asking them to stop following Prince George, Prince William's lawyer said.

The caution on the paparazi came after an incident in a central London park last week when an individual was spotted near Prince George and his nanny.

"They are obviously concerned," a spokesman for the royal couple said.He added the men had "over a period of time established a pattern of behaviour that we think amounts to harassment of Prince George and of his nanny".

He said they believed some pictures of George had appeared in European publications but not in Britain, where the press has exercised greater restraint since Diana's death.

However, the royals complained about harassment of Kate before the couple married in 2011.

A year after their wedding, European magazines printed topless pictures of Kate taken while she was on holiday in France

I Slept On The Streets Of Ghana just To Make It – Patoranking

Today, Nneameka Okorie, popularly called Patoranking, is one of the most celebrated reggae-dancehall artists in Nigeria and by extension, Africa. But the story, like that of most people, has not always been that good for the 'Alubarika' star.

Patoranking was recently in Ghana for a show last week where he had an exclusive interview with top Ghanaian radio personality Bola Ray on Starr 103.5 FM. In the course of the interview, he revealed that his music career actually started off in Ghana.

According to him, 'I started music from my mum's belly, but dancehall has always been something that I grew up listening to and it was perfected in Ghana.'

Patoranking's first trip to Ghana, according to him, was in 2007 after he was admitted into Cape Coast University. After a year at the university, he dropped out due to financial constraints.

"I had to move from Cape Coast to Accra. I was sleeping on the streets of Osu just to make it. We must make am now…survival at all cost', he said before adding: 'The only option I had at that point was making it in life because I just had to change the course of my family, the face of my family you know…being the first child…I just say thank you Lord and to everybody that never doubted me. I pray for them still and we're still together,' he added.

It is on record that while hustling in Ghana, Patoranking met a young Ghanaian entrepreneur named Lanky on the streets of Osu who partnered with him to achieve his dreams. Lanky started a production company called Black Rhythms Entertainment and made a few tracks with him, the songs enjoyed some airplay but it was difficult to break through in Ghana so he returned to Nigeria and the rest, as they say, it history.

Hired SSS Operatives Shot NYSC Boss’ Son In Bayelsa State

Preye, who is said to be the son of the Chairman of the Governing Board, National Youth Service Corps, Chief Gordon Bozimo, has been allegedly shot by suspected operatives of the Department of State Security in Bayelsa State.

Preye was said to have been shot in the stomach in Peretimi Hotels located at Imgbi Road, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where he had lodged.

The victim alleged that the manager of the hotel hired operatives of the Department of State Security to shoot him.

He said on Sunday that three suspected DSS operatives were personally led by the manager of the hotel to deal with him and finally shoot him in the stomach.

It was learnt that following the incident, the hotel was shut down for about five days after some of the workers were arrested, detained and later released by the police.

Preye, who hails from Bomadi, Delta State, spoke in his hospital bed at the Surgical Ward of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he is lying critically ill.

Preye, a building contractor and founder of Prezimo Global Resources, said he lodged in the hotel on September 30 with his cousin, Mr. Nathaniel Alaweremi.

But he said trouble started when he had an argument in the room with his cousin over some financial miscalculations.

The quarrel, he said, attracted the hotel manager whose office was located directly opposite their room.

Preye said, "Last week, Tuesday, I came into Yenagoa so, I went to Peretimi Hotel on Imgbi road. I got there and paid for a room. I had little argument with my cousin on monetary issues involving our construction.

"Our voices went high due to the little argument. The room I lodged in was opposite the manager's office. She came and accused us of chasing one of her customers away because of our noise.

"She said we were so noisy and didn't think we could stay in her hotel. So, we said no problem that she should refund our money to us. I approached her and told her that as a manager, she was not supposed to treat her customers like that. She immediately responded and said she would show me."

Preye, who was writhing in pains, said the manager left them and shortly came back with three armed persons he identified as SSS operatives.

He added, "She left and came in with three SSS men. They were in suites and they wore glasses with two guns and a big riffle. Immediately, they asked my cousin to leave the room. They locked me inside.

"Everything looked suspicious to me because I know that it is not how to arrest a person. While I was trying to plead with the manager that the matter had not got to the level she took it, the SSS men punched on me.

"The next thing I heard was a shot and I realised it was on my stomach and I fell to the ground inside the room and they started hitting me. The other one said, 'empty his pocket' and they took all my money, my ATM cards, my wrist watch, pulled my trousers, took my shoes and my car key.

"It was a clear robbery. They now dragged me outside. I was on t-shirt and on boxer shorts. They dragged me through the pavements; all my ribs were paining me.

"Then they fired two shots into the air. When my cousin came to where I was lying, they threatened to shoot him on the leg. They took me into their bus and went away. When we got to the station, they put me on the ground and I was bleeding."

When asked the name of the station he was taken to, he said, "I did not really no because I was dizzy but it was an SSS station. On the ground, I was bleeding and shouting everybody refused to attend to me.

"But when they saw the amount of blood coming out of my body they now decided to take me to the hospital. So, I was asking why they shot me like a common criminal. They said that they are security agents and they choose to do whatsoever they wish to do and that there is nothing I can do."

The 32-year-old man said he lost all his valuables including about N100,000 to his attackers during the incident that happened between 12pm and 2pm on the fateful day.

Preye continued, "They shot me in my stomach. One of the bullets went in and came out. The other bullet that went in, they still haven't seen the bullet and the doctor here said I have to go for further check abroad because they have done their best.
"They said even if they see the bullet, they can't operate it. So, this is the situation. These men were so confident of themselves because they said I can't do anything. I think they have been doing this kind of thing."

His cousin, Alaweremi, who corroborated the story, insisted that men of the DSS were persons hired by the hotel manager to beat and shoot his cousin.

He said, "The manager was laughing at my brother's ordeal and she said that we got what we were looking for. My brother did nothing wrong. The doctors are saying that they couldn't handle the case here and that he should be taken abroad. Where will the money come out from to run these expenses?"

Though the state Director, DSS, Mr. Dawa Everest, could not be reached for his comments, the Commissioner of Police, said he had yet to get details of the incident.
